Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Quality, Strategy and Patient Experience, Quality Improvement Specialists partner with clinical and administrative leaders to drive high-value improvements in healthcare quality, focusing on safety, efficiency, and patient-centered care.

Using expertise in QI methodologies, project management, and change management, the specialist supports the organization in five key areas:

  1. Strategic Objectives & Corporate Initiatives: Focuses on organizational alignment, legislative requirements, and external standards.
  2. Improvement Methodology & Problem Solving:  Focuses on the technical application of Lean and other quality tools to drive and support improvement.
  3. Patient Safety & Incident Analysis: Focuses on prevention, incident reviews, learning and risk reduction.
  4. Data Analytics & Performance Measurement: Identifying problems and opportunities - using metrics, statistical methods, and targets.
  5. Coaching and Education: Focuses on organizational continuous quality improvement management system and culture.

Qualifications

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree: Undergraduate degree in Healthcare; a Master’s degree is a preferred asset.
  • Clinical Background: a Regulated Health Professional (RN, SW, OT, PT, etc.) is preferred.
  • Certifications: Professional training in LEAN, or Project Management (PMP) is a plus.

Experience & Technical Skills

  • Background: 3–5 years of hands-on experience in Healthcare Quality Improvement or management.
  • QI Tools: Expert at using PDSA, A3, RCA and FMEA to solve problems and improve safety.
  • Data Savvy: Skilled at using statistics and metrics to measure clinical and operational opportunities and success.

Leadership & Collaboration Skills

  • Agile team player ready to learn from and support colleagues
  • Effective communicator with strong writing and facilitation skills
  • Cultivator of productive working relationships within diverse stakeholder groups.

Responsibilities

  • Engage and coach leaders to optimize Quality Improvement Board Huddles, departmental improvement ideas, and other processes and structures of our system of continuous quality improvement.
  • Support unit, program, and organization-level improvement initiatives in clinical and non-clinical areas
  • Developing and supporting auditing and feedback/improvement processes and tools; data management
  • Apply improvement tools and methods such as visual management, A3 thinking, PDSA cycles, root cause analysis approaches (5 Whys, fishbones) data collection and analysis, process/value stream mapping, Simplex thinking    
  • Contribute to, or lead, the development of standard work, standard operating procedures, and formal policies and procedures; support our document approval and management processes
  • Conduct external scans and connect with peer organizations to bring new ideas, information, and innovation to JBH
  • Apply data/statistical analysis to facilitate interpretation, decision-making, and improvement (What? So What? Now What?)
  • Support the application of Accreditation criteria and tests of compliance, HIROC Risk Assessment Checklists, and other best practice standards and assessment tools to inform and drive improvement
  • Prepare and present data, briefing notes and reports to leaders, teams and committees
  • Collaborate with diverse organizational partners such a Patient/Family Advisors, Professional Practice, Organizational Development, Decision Support, IT, etc
  • Facilitate patient safety incident reviews, Quality of Care Reviews and/or Coroner Case Reviews, and follow-up processes
  • Develop orientation, training and education materials related to quality and patient safety
  • Maintain a "roll-up-your-sleeves" mindset, and persist through challenges to implement and sustain improvements.
