POSITION SUMMARY:
The Corporate Clinical Scholar role supports JBH’s mission, vision and values, goals and objectives. The primary function of the role is to provide bedside coaching to inpatient novice nurses working with acute, post-acute and critical care populations to support the novice nurse’s successful transition into practice. The Clinical Scholar influences and advances nursing practice by utilizing strong skill development role modelling and leadership skills, effective teaching strategies and successful coaching techniques.
The Clinical Scholar collaborates with program/unit leadership and the novice nurse to provide and promote ongoing professional development at the bedside to enhance skill development, knowledge translation and the integration of best practices (Standards of Care, Policies and Procedures, guidelines, clinical protocols etc.) into daily work. The overall goal is to influence continuous quality improvement in clinical practice, patient outcomes and the provision of quality patient care that is in alignment with the JBH Care Commitment and Strategic Plan.
This position will provide real time “at the bedside/at the elbow” leadership, role modelling, clinical coaching, and teaching activities to enhance novice nurses knowledge transfer/uptake to achieve quality patient outcomes, empower staff and promote best practice. They will facilitate development of “in the moment” skill building, knowledge translation (including of relevant legislation, regulatory standards and JBH policies, procedures and protocols), critical thinking, communication skills and self-reflective practice/learning in the workplace.
REPORTS TO: Manager, Professional Practice
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse with a minimum of 8-10 or more years of current or recent (within last 12 months) front line experience with acute medicine, surgery or critical care populations.
- Demonstrated expert clinical assessment, nursing intervention skills/competence, and application of critical thinking
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
- Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required
- Previous experience supporting and teaching adult clinical learners, students and/or novice nursing staff
- Creative, flexible and work effectively with a diverse group of individuals with a sound understanding of the many different adult learning styles, effective teaching strategies and educational backgrounds.
- Demonstrated high degree of proficiency and compliance with CNO Entry to Practice Competencies/Standards, relevant Legislation and JBH policies/procedures and protocols with aim to role model and coach nurses to continually seek and access resources that ground strong professional nursing practice.
- Demonstrated change management and problem solving skills
- Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including comfort level with providing in the moment reflective feedback
- Self-directed and highly motivated individual with a passion for learning and supporting others in the process
- ACLS and Critical Care Certificate preferred
- Coronary Care 1 or equivalent preferred to support care of telemetry populations
- Good attendance record is required
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning
