POSITION SUMMARY:
This is an exciting opportunity for passionate, self-directed nursing, paramedic, and medical students to join our interprofessional team as a Clinical Extern. As a member of the health care team, the Clinical Extern opportunity will give you hands-on patient care experience, insight into the bedside care environment and further exposure to Joseph Brant Hospital. All positions are temporary. The Clinical Extern will work in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. They work in collaboration with the units’ interprofessional team under direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered nursing professional.
REPSONSIBILITIES:
- Practice as part of the interprofessional team to support patient care
- Assist with basic patient care/clinical tasks under the supervision of registered nursing professionals (bathing/hygiene/personal care; turning and repositioning; transfers using lifts and other transfer devices; basic skin care; setting up patients for meals and assisting where necessary; purposeful rounding; answering call bells)
- Contribute to Transfer of Accountability (TOA) during nurse-to-nurse shift reports under the assignment and direct supervision of an RN or RPN
- Provide delegated care tasks, including but not limited to: vital signs, physical assessmenst, priming and setting up IV tubing, charting & documentation, and non-urgent patient transfers when deemed appropriate by registered nursing staff
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with the interprofessional team
- Report changes in patient status promptly to the most responsible nurse for best patient care
- Ensure all tasks are completed as assigned under the direct supervision of registered nursing staff
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Student currently enrolled in Year 2 or above of one of the following programs: Practical Nursing, Baccalaureate Nursing, Paramedic or Medical education program
- Familiarity with computer applications, or willingness to learn computer skills as required
- Strong communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and teamwork skills within an interdisciplinary health care team
- Excellent problem solving and conflict management abilities
- Ability to perform verbal de-escalation strategies with patients and families
- Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment appropriate for the position
- Willingness to accept assigned or delegated responsibilites
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various hospital departments
- Phyically capable of lifting using appropriate techniques, bending, pushing, and pulling using safe body mechanics
- Demonstrated good attendance and a consistent record of reliability and performance
